I artikeln ”The Bible” (2001) menar David S. Yeago att i kyrkans historia har Bibeln sällan lästs som en platt yta utan olika texter har fått olika vikt (78). Det finns ett centrum – Jesus – och en periferi. Samtidigt görs anspråk om enhet. Hur man förstår den enheten får konsekvenser för hur man ser på Bibeln som norm för kyrkan. Ofta uppfattas anspråk på enhet som en sorts fundamentalistisk relik i ljuset av all historisk-kritisk forskning som klargjort motsättningar och spänningar även om de ofta har överbetonats.

Det kanske låter som en självklarhet, men han utvecklar den tanken i olika spännande riktningar med exempel från kyrkohistorien.

The Anabaptists, partly because of outside forces, gave priority to the proclamation and realization of the gospel in the community before they participated in shaping the world. Already Celsus blamed such an attitude for leaving "the government on earth for the most lawless and wildest barbarians" who neither respect the worship of God nor true wisdom among people. The accusation that Christian pacifism thrives on the fact that others take care of the dirty business of politics has a tradition!
